Active Nasutitermes Colony Discovered During Farm Inspection
Recently, FirstStop Pest Management attended a rural property in the Wagga area after the landowner noticed unusual termite activity around a wood pile.
During our inspection, we identified the species Nasutitermes Termites, a fascinating termite found throughout Australia.
What are Nasutitermes Termites?
Nasutitermes are easily recognised by their distinctive pointed “snout” (known as a Nasute) located on the front of their heads. Unlike many termite species that rely on strong jaws for defence, Nasutitermes soldiers use their snout to spray a sticky defensive substance as predators.
The Nasutitermes termite is often found in trees, stumps, fallen timbers, fence posts and mounds.
What we Found
At this particular farm, active Nasutitermes termites were discovered feeding within a wood pile. Evidence of termite activity was visible around several areas, with workers and soldiers actively moving through galleries and damaged timber.
While Nasutitermes are not always the most destructive termites species to buildings, their presence indicated an established colony nearby and should not be ignored. Over time they can cause significant damage to timber structures, sheds and fencing.
Treatment and Management
Following confirmation of the active colony, treatment was carried out to reduce termite activity and helps protect the surrounding structures on the property.
